What are textiles?

In interior design, the term “textile” refers to any product that’s woven or made of fabric. It may sound simple, but these pieces are used in a variety of applications throughout any room. You can see them in design elements, such as:

-Throw pillows

-Blankets

-Area rugs

-Window treatments

-Upholstery

Grand Builder has all types of fabrics:

Natural materials:

Silk

Silk is perfect if you want to create a rich, classy look. This fabric is soft and flowy. It is often used in bed linens and curtains. Silk is a perfect choice if the space has large windows or doorways. It matches perfectly with wooden flooring.

However, it wrinkles easily, requires lots of maintenance, and stains quickly.

Cotton

Cotton is a classic and extremely versatile fabric, that comes in different textures and thicknesses. Cotton has high tensile strength, making it a strong and long-lasting material that does not rip or tear easily.  It is a strong and long-lasting fabric that can be washed and dried quickly.

Cotton is often used for blankets and bedding but can also be found in other less common areas such as carpets and curtains. If you want to add a simple textile to your room that won’t break the bank, then cotton is a great idea.

Linen

Linen is a great choice because of its natural beauty. This fabric is soft, durable, hypoallergenic and breathable. It is also moisture-resistant, making it difficult for bacterial growth.

Linen is perfect for bedding, upholstery, drapery, and accent pillows, with its variety in appearance and color.

Velvet

Velvet is another fabric that gives spaces and furniture a touch of elegance. It looks and feels luxurious and is a great material for bedding, curtains, and couch and sofa covers.

If you are looking to create a sophisticated and royal look in an informal space, this is a great fabric to consider.

Leather

Leather is a great choice for dining chairs, study chairs or even sofas. It is soft and extremely comfortable and gives the room an expensive look. The leather is best used in brown or black tones to give it a natural look.

The leather is quite easy to care for. It can be wiped dry, vacuumed or even cleaned with special skin cleaning products so as not to create unnecessary hassle.

-Synthetic materials:

Nylon

Nylon is produced as a result of a chemical reaction involving oil and coal. It is known for its strength and durability, but at the same time light and soft to the touch. However, over time, nylon fibers fade and lose strength.

Acrylics

Acrylics are created through a chemical reaction between nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon. Acrylic fabrics are known for being soft, lightweight, durable, and hypoallergenic. Acrylic fabrics also hold dyes well, won’t fade from sun exposure, and are often used as a cost-effective and lightweight alternative to wool. As such, acrylics are commonly used to produce inexpensive throws, rugs, upholstery, and bedding.

Polyester

Polyester is a sturdy textile that can be used for numerous purposes, making it a popular choice for decorating. Polyester is long-lasting and relatively stain-resistant. It is also somewhat cheap to produce and buy, making it a budget-friendly textile choice.

Choosing a combination of fabrics and patterns

There is a delicate balance one can notice when you mix fabrics and patterns. The key is to incorporate no more than three patterns or textures. Here are some tips:

Find a base fabric color for your design. Build your color scheme around that fabric.

Choose colors that are opposite in the color wheel (dark navy blue and mustard color would look great).

If the rooms are small, avoid large patterns and prints, they will make the room look congested and smaller.

Different sizes of your pattern, like if you have large prints, you can go for smaller stripes or patterns.

Use bold prints on throws, blankets, and accent pillows. Changing these is easy and affordable.

One needs to use horizontal stripes in fabric to create a narrow room feel wider and vertical stripe fabrics to make a low ceiling look higher.
